COMMON CHILDHOOD ILLNESSES AND CONDITIONS

RINGWORM

Ringworm isn't caused by a worm. It is a very common yeast infection which infects body and scalp hairs and causes them to break. Most cases are transmitted from other children who are infected. Without treatment, hair loss can spread. Hair regrowth is normal after treatment, but will take 6-12 months. No home care exists for scalp ringworm. If you suspect scalp ringworm, call your physician during office hours.

BODY RINGWORM
HOME CARE

  • Apply antifungal cream (over-the-counter or prescription Tinactin or Micatin cream) until gone. Continue to apply one additional week or until skin is improved.
  • Children may return to school and/or day care 48 hours after treatment is started

CALL THE DOCTOR DURING REGULAR OFFICE HOURS IF:

  • The rash hasn't cleared up within 4 weeks
  • The ringworm continues to spread after 1 week of treatment
  • The ringworm becomes infected with a pus or yellow crust
  • The scalp becomes involved due to hair loss
